A father's love is a powerful force. Here are ten meaningful family traditions to help you celebrate Dad this Father's Day.

1. Make sure Dad knows that this is his day and that you will be spending time as a family doing whatever he wishes. If you have younger kids in the house, ask them to make him a crown that he can wear on his big day.

2. Let the kids make Dad breakfast and send it up to him on a tray when he wakes up. Also make sure he has a cup of coffee or tea, as well as the day's newspaper and a sharp pencil if he enjoys doing the crossword or Sodoku puzzle.

3. Give Dad a Memory Jar. Cut 50 to 100 strips of paper, and give 20 or 30 to each family member so that they can each record special memories they have shared with dear Dad. This Father's Day, present him with the jar. In subsequent years and on other important holidays throughout the year, you can add to the jar by including more strips of paper in his card or gift.

4. Ask the kids to write a letter to their Dad, detailing the things that they appreciate about him, as well as the special memories that they will treasure from the past year. Make this an annual tradition and keep the letters so that you can collect them in a book or album as the children get older. An alternative is to record the sentiments on video. Each year, you can watch the video and add to it.

5. Ask your dad about his favorite charity and, each year, make a donation in his name.

6. What is Dad's favorite sport or activity? Take the family along for a bike ride or picnic, if he enjoys the great outdoors. If he's a golf lover, have the kids plan a few hours of fun at the local putt putt course.

7. What is Dad's favorite board game? Make sure to take time during the day to play a game.

8. Invite the dads in your neighborhood over for a barbecue. The moms can do the grilling while the dads relax with a cold glass of iced tea or other beverage.

9. If you don't have grandparents or uncles living close by, make sure to give each of the special dads in your family a call or send them a handmade card.

What To Get Dad For Father's Day?

Finding the right gift for Dad can be tricky. Most fathers don't have their wish list ready when you ask them for it. If Dad wants something, he will usually just go get it. What to get Dad for Father's Day? That is the age old question.

The simplest thing would seem to be a gift card for his favorite restaurant, home improvement store, or auto parts store. This approach can come off as being a bit impersonal, however. Most men are not as distant as they may seem and something that shows that you put a little extra time and effort into Dad's gift would likely be very appreciated.

Let's look at some other choices.

Does your Dad spend most of his time at the office? Great, run with that idea! Any local engraving store could personally engrave something for Dad's office...a clock, a picture frame, a pen set, etc.

Dad will be reminded of your thoughtful gift throughout the day! After all, you're one of the reasons he is there, working hard. You might also come across a wide variety of business card holders, tie clips, wallets and cuff links. You can also add a simple engraving plate to just about anything.

Is your Dad a little more down-to-earth? Maybe he's a coach, a musician, or an architect. Don't forget about the simpler things like key chains, personalized mugs, money clips, etc.

When getting a gift personalized, remember to keep the message short and to the point. You want it to be something Dad will always remember.

If engraving isn't your thing, you can always stop at one of those photo stands at the mall and have your own picture put on something...a desk calendar, a t-shirt, you name it, your picture can probably go on it.

You can also look for gifts that fall right in line with your Dad's interests. Maybe he's a Star Trek fan, or a NASCAR fan, a baseball fan, or a football fan. You can never go wrong with a gift with his favorite team's logo on it.

If your Dad loves to grill outdoors, perhaps some new grilling tools would be in order. What Dad wouldn't love a nice, new meat thermometer or grill cleaning kit?

Gifts For Dad

Fathers Day Gift

As a dad, I can tell you what works for Father's Day and what doesn't. Over the years, I've received ties with flashing lights, "World's Greatest Dad" T-shirts, picture frames, electronic singing and dancing hamsters, and even a set of tires. While I've worn or used every one of those gifts even if it was just for making my kids happy. There are some things I'm hoping to find under my "Father's Day Tree" this year.

Making the top of my list is the Sirius Stiletto 100 with the car kit. This thing is so cool. Not only can I listen to Sirius radio, it's got a built in MP3 player that lets me listen to my own music, as well as record whatever is playing on the radio. What's really neat about this little guy is that I can use the Stiletto 100 over any public Wi-Fi network. That means I can sit in my favorite coffee shop and listen to satellite radio without having to have a high-gain antenna of some sort. If the Sirius 100 with the car kit is out of the price range, I could live with Stiletto 10. It's a more barebones option, with no Wi-Fi connectivity, but it still gives me access to my MP3s.

I'm also hoping to get a nice set of portable speakers to go with my MP3 player on Father's day. The Altec-Lansing InMotion series is pretty slick, as is the LG MSP-100. These guys will look great sitting on the desk in my den. I can almost hear the Jazz bouncing off of the bookshelves now. Every dad should have some sort of portable music option so we can have music when working in the garage or enjoying a nice spring day on the deck out back.

If I can go way out there and dream for a minute, I'd like to think that my kids have been saving their allowances for the last six years or so, and that they've been working a part-time third-shift job I don't know about. If that's the case, I'm hoping for the Hitachi P50T501. With 50 inches of pure High Def, I'll be in heaven come World Series. A high definition receiver with a DIRECTV HD subscription would add even more enjoyment to the mix.

I know, I know, I'm more likely to get a tie. But kids, if you're reading this, please know that this year, I'd prefer a Van Heusen, Robert Talbott, or Josh Bach designer tie. The multi-colored, flashing light tie that reads "BEST DAD EVER" is sweet and all but I prefer something we can enjoy together. Buy dad some new music from satellite radio so we can dance. Buy dad that new TV so we can cuddle on the couch with some popcorn on movie night. Play your cards right and convince mom to buy me something we both can use.

Don't worry, though. No matter what you make me, I'll be wearing it to work the next day and it will be the best Father's Day Gift ever.
